Benzodiazepines are widely prescribed for a variety of conditions such as anxiety, insomnia and in severe cases of depression if accompanied by anxiety or severe distress.

The Committee on Safety of Medicines strongly recommend not to use benzodiazepines alone to treat depression or anxiety associated with depression, since suicide may be precipitated in such patients.
