Side effects and dose reduction

The most common side effects include:

  • Fatigue
  • Hang-over effect
  • Confusion
  • Stumbling and falls (specially for elderly people)
  • Poor concentration
  • Ataxia
  • Memory loss
  • Drowsiness
  • Aggression
  • Disinhibitation reactions (patients feeling angry, irritable or agitated)

With carefully managed withdrawal and sufficient psychological support for motivated patients, successful cessation of benzodiazepines can reach 70-80%. Gradual dosage reduction is seen as a key strategy for successful discontinuation of the medication.

All patients that have been prescribed benzodiazepines by their GP’s must consult their doctor about cessation of the medication.
